Silver Gilt
Sterling silver Vs Silver gilt…what’s the difference?
Can someone tell me the difference between the two? Which is of higher grade and are they rust proof or will discolouration set in for either? Thanks!
Sterling silver is about 90-95% silver and about one other metal and will not wear thru because of it’s high silver contant.
Silver gilt is a thin layer of silver over another metal sometimes copper. Which is why with heavy wear will get a tarnished look as the top layer of silver wears thru.
If you want to wear something everyday Sterling silver is best.
If you will only wear it every so often, the Silver gilt will be fine, be sure to wipe it down after use with a soft cloth to remove any oils transfered from you skin. My sister used to get longer use of her ring and bracelets that were only a gilt by brushing them with clear nail polish..to give an extra layer of protection….always test on a different piece to see if you like the way it works for you.
