Painting on a canvas, need advice on what paints to use?
Hey so I’m painting cartoon sheep on a canvas (don’t ask. lol.) and i was trying to figure out what paints to use. I’m new to the having to buy paints thing, so I’m not sure what brands to use or what kinds of paints would work best? I was thinking something thicker? I am an experienced artist, I’ve used acrylic paints a lot but I’m getting bored with them.
I’ve used oils before, you’re right, i dont care for them. what about temperas? would that work? what else do i buy with it?
and if i paint with acrylics, do i put a gloss coat or something on the top?
I would naturally suggest acrylic, it sounds like it would be what’s best for this project, but since you already mentioned that as something you’re bored of, the only other option I see is oils.
Oils, though, I don’t think you’ll be a fan of, especially if you’re used to acrylic. They take forever and day to dry and have a different consistancy than acrylic. If you’re going to go to the store and buy them, though, I would suggest just getting the basics: gesso, a basic color set, linseed oil, and if you want to get some varnish, that’s cool too.
I don’t really have a brand suggestion, I’m afraid, but just get what’s cheapest because you might find out you really don’t like using them and then you’ve spent this mass amount of money on something you’ll never use again..
